Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, a Japanese multinational automobile manufacturer is the sixth largest producer of automobiles in Japan. Also the sixteenth biggest automaker in the world, the Mitsubishi Motors have a limited presence in India. It had entered the Indian market in the year 1998 through a joint venture with the Indian automaker Hindustan motors. The production facility of the corporation is located in Tamil Nadu.
However, the Mitsubishi has not managed to garner as much popularity as the other Japanese carmakers in India. The reason for the lower popularity of the Mitsubishi cars could be the fact that there are not many models in India from Mitsubishi. In addition, most of the models that they offer here are those, which have been withdrawn from the other global markets. However, even though these cars have been retired elsewhere, it does not mean that they are low on quality or performance. On the contrary, these vehicles are as great and powerful as any other cars are. They are highly reliable vehicles on all types of terrains.
Nevertheless, the major models of Mitsubishi sold in India include the ones like Mitsubishi Pajero and Pajero Sport.
However, the first car from Mitsubishi to be assembled in India was the Lancer. At the time it was introduced, the Lancer sold in huge numbers and became the best seller in no time. Yet, after a series of upgrades and face-lifts, the car was finally bid good bye.
Mitsubishi followed up the Lancer with other models like Cedia, which managed only an average success rate. On the other hand, recent models like the Pajero, Montero and Outlander has clocked better sales figures in India. Of the trio, Mitsubishi Pajero is the most popular car and it is available for a price tag starting from INR 2350000/- (Ex-showroom).
Outlander is another popular car from Mitsubishi, which has sold in good numbers. It comes at for a base rate of INR 2075159/-. However, this car has been also discontinued recently. Conversely, the Indian car market is filled with news of a diesel variant of the Outlander launching in India in 2014. Once that happens, a lot of interest would be generated around it.
Mitsubishi Montero, a premium SUV from the carmaker, comes at a base price of INR 4134000/- in India. The Montero is one of the most preferred vehicles of the people who can afford premium vehicles.
With an aim to revive its prospects in India, Mitsubishi is looking forward to introducing some new cars in the Indian market. As a result, the car lovers in India can look forward to Mitsubishi cars like the Mitsubishi EVO XI (Coupe), Mitsubishi Mirage (Hatchback), Mitsubishi Grandis (MUV) and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Automatic (SUV).
